Karaoke Because...Why Not?

Just because we can't sing doesn't mean we shouldn't.

I'll never forget the first time I was exposed to Karaoke. It was the early 80's and my mom had accepted a teaching job in Okinawa, Japan. We'd only been there a week or so when we dipped into a restaurant where terrible music and wonderful laughter was coming from a rear dining room. We couldn't see what was going on, but we couldn't stop laughing. There was another American sitting nearby and he leaned toward us and said, "It's a birthday party back there and they're doing Karaoke." I feigned a trip to the restroom so I could take a peek. An odd-looking box with an attached microphone was placed on a table. I watched one of the Bijinesuman (businessmen) drop a coin into the machine. He pushed a few buttons and the music started to play Frank Sinatra's "New York, New York". His fellow Bijinesuman were cheering him on.

Karaoke didn't catch on in the states until the early 90's, but as of 2017, it's now a $435 million industry. Why is it so popular? Because it's so much fun!

The thing about Karaoke is this: When it's good it's great but it's even better when it's bad.

I don't remember how it came up, but John and I have been talking about going out to do some Karaoke sometime. I think we've kept putting it off because neither of us believed the other was actually SERIOUS about doing it until the other day. So now that we've decided to really go, we have to prepare. You can't just show up at Karaoke, especially if you're planning on doing a duet, as we are. Or can we?

Do we really have to pick a song in advance and practice it? I think we should. We've looked at this list of suggested Karaoke duets and we can't agree on one. Look at the song list here, pick the one you think we should sing and drop John or me a line at John@thesoundseattle.com or Jeanne@thesoundseattle.com.

Then we have to find just the right Karaoke bar. If you know of one, by all means, let us know!

Stay tuned for when and where we'll be doing it and, hopefully, you'll join us for Karaoke night!
