Air conditioning might be rare in the Seattle area, but we sure have a lot of great ice cream shops.

Most cities are lucky to have a couple of Ben & Jerry's or Menchie's. We have plenty of those, and believe me, nothing makes my 6-year-old son happier than a trip through the self-serve wonderland that is Menchie's in West Seattle. But just as we've become a mecca for indy coffee shops and craft breweries, Seattle and the surrounding communities have a bounty of fantastic ice cream spots.

My go-to website for this kind of information is often Red Tricycle Seattle, and they just posted Where to Find the Best Ice Cream, Froyo & Gelato in Seattle. Somebody over there did their research, because they've got you covered, whether it's the usual national chains (i.e. Yogurtland), the local legends like Molly Moon's, Cupcake Royale, Husky Deli in my West Seattle neighborhood, and Full Tilt . . . . or one of the new breed of gourmet hand-crafted small-batch ice cream places, like Salt & Straw in Ballard and Capitol Hill, Cloud Nine at Southcenter, Mora on Bainbridge Island and the Kitsap Peninsula, or Fainting Goat in Wallingford.

Sure, when the weather gets hot, the lines get long at some of these places, but is there anything more sublime on a sizzlilng summer evening than rewarding that anticipation with a couple of indulgent scoops of great ice cream in a big waffle cone?

Here's the whole story. Maybe take a pint to go, just to be safe!
