Ah, Valentine's Day. Is it legit, or just a made-up holiday? A conspiracy cooked up by Hallmark and companies that make chocolates and champagne and lingerie? In a way, it doesn't matter. You need to seize any opportunity to show your special someone that you care, and if you ignore it, you're taking a serious risk. So one way or another, my advice is to acknowledge this holiday and do something special for your sweetie.

The obvious move is to book a table for two in a romantic restaurant. Start here, with Open Table's list of spots that are doing V-Day specials, set menus, and other Valentine-y things, either in Seattle or anywhere around the Sound. (My personal favorites, at least in Seattle: Cafe Lago in Montlake, Tilth in Wallingford, and Terra Plata on Capitol Hill.) Here's a list of some especially romantic restaurants around here.

Another tip is to treat the Seattle/Tacoma area as if you're a tourist. Do something locals don't always bother with, like an improv show, an Argosy cruise, or an evening at a real play -- dramatic or musical. This list is a good place to start.

How about a Valentine's Day Couples Party in Tacoma?

Not in a couple? Let the universe hook you up at a Valentine's Tantra Speed Dating event in Seattle.

Or if you're in a couple where your brains are the big attraction, head to the Seattle Aquarium and find out how marine species express their affection for one another.

Shameless plug (because I do their commercials, and they're conveniently located all around the Sound) -- Hand & Stone Massage and Facial Spa has a nice Valentine's special going for you and your sweetie. You can't go wrong with the gift of pampering!

They're doing a Dinner Detective Interactive Murder Mystery Dinner for Valentine's Day at the Heathman Hotel in Kirkland but that may be sold out by the time you see this. (Maybe a gift certificate for an upcoming murder mystery?)

If you're budget-conscious (since Valentine's Day does fall so soon after you've tried to tackle those holiday bills) you need these ideas from Greater Seattle on the Cheap -- lots of links to less pricey options, and they'll even steer you to deals on roses.

Oh yeah, and there's this: a bouquet of baby-back ribs for your sweetie? Yes. Yes you can.

That's a start. Just be yourself, be sincere, and I hope you and your special someone feel closer than ever after doing something fun together on Valentine's Day this year.
