Now there's a way to watch the same movie as your friends, at the same time, and chat in real time

I love this idea!

One of the benefits of sheltering at home, or quarantining, or social distancing, or whatever you want to call it, should be that you can hunker down with your sweetie or your kids and watch one movie after another from the comfort of your sofa. But what if your S.O. is somewhere else -- perhaps in their own home or apartment? Then what?

Thanks to a new Google Chrome extension called Netflix Party, now you can watch the same show or movie on Netflix, at the same time, and even chat in real time about what you're watching. All you need is the Google Chrome browser on your laptop, the Netflix Party Chrome extension, and access to a Netflix subscription.

Here's the story from USA Today. And here's a video that shows it in action, sort of.

What I love about this is that we've figured out how to use technology and the web to unite us during a time when we have to be physically apart from people we care about. And if you can share a laugh or a good cry with someone you love, even if you don't have each other to physically lean on -- or even if you can't both stick your hands in the same buttery bowl of popcorn --  it's way better than isolation and loneliness. I can totally see my son and one of his pals, deprived of a playdate for safety's sake, watching The Captain Underpants Movie together from different couches.

What did we ever do before Netflix?
