Salty's at the SEA and other local restaurants coming to Sea-Tac airport

The airport is moving away from national chains and emphasizing PNW dining options

You probably don't think of fine cuisine when you're killing time at the airport, but Sea-Tac Airport is in the process of upping their culinary game, and it looks like they're making some good moves.

According to the Seattle Times:

This spring, visitors to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport can expect an expanded menu of new eating options as the airport’s massive renovation continues. By the end of March, the newly upgraded North Satellite expects to have three new restaurants — Bambuza Vietnamese Kitchen, Caffe D’arte, and the Skillet  . . . . . Five more restaurants are slated for the south side of the central terminal: Pei Wei Asian Diner, Lucky Louie, Pallino’s, Evergreens, and Ko Shi Suhin Bento. Those eight will be joined by more restaurants and shops over the next several years. 

One of the biggest changes is the closing of Anthony's, on the north side of the Central Terminal, which has been a huge fixture in the airport for years. Even though Anthony's is a local chain, that restaurant is being replaced by another slightly smaller full-service local name, Salty's. The Sea-Tac outpost will be called Salty's at the SEA (the airports 3-letter code, get it?)

Also headed to the airport is a new concept, Ballard Brew Hall. A craft beer bar, it’s billed as “reflecting the best of Seattle’s craft beer scene”. It appears to have no direct affiliation with any one brewery (including the Ballard Beer Company), and it’s not immediately clear why it’s named for that neighborhood. In any case, expect beer and probably pub food. Already confirmed for Sea-Tac are local-ish names like Skillet, Salt & Straw Ice Cream, Sunset Fried Chicken Sandwiches, and Skillet. A new restaurant, Floret, from the owners of vegetarian favorite Cafe Flora, is already up and running. Skillet should be in place sometime around the end of March, along with Vietnamese restaurant Bambuza, and coffee shop Caffe d’Arte. Renovations will be ongoing for a few more years, with many of the new dining options slated for 2020.

I think these changes are a great move for the airport. A long layover is a lot more tolerable in airport that seems to really reflect the vibe of its home city, whether it's Dallas or Charlotte or Detroit. But I'll miss Anthony's, mostly because Jeanne and I had a sweet time there a few months ago when Sea-Tac was trying an experimental "guest" program that let you go past security without a boarding pass so you could meet loved ones at the gate or just hang out and have a drink and a shrimp cocktail.

As you can see in our little travelogue, the hospitality of Brenda, our server at Anthony's, was top-notch. I hope she lands on her feet when Salty's at the SEA opens.
